This post and the information you provide are so valuable, Maia. I wonder if you've ever connected with Susan Harley, who writes Courageous Conversations. I think you both would have a lot to share with one another on this topic.

We did not expect what’s to come and built a solid fireproof , flood proof , off grid solar home with five ponds and fields to grow food and fruit. Planted more nopales , garrumbullo , maguay , mesquite and other food sources. We didn’t foresee the masses of cutter ants and grasshoppers that defoliate a lot . We need a green / screen house.

Love this. I appreciate your voice and approach as always. To share a resource for anybody who sees this, I personally have followed Chris at City Prepping for a few years now. He's got a YouTube Channel where he will cover practical things to do, current/weekly news events that night impact things. He always ends with "a word of encouragement." Recently, he said something in the spirit of: we prep to live, we don't prep to stay in a cycle of fear and paralysis. It was a helpful reminder for me, and I feel like the vibe is similar in this post. Thank you!

Maia, I love how you take an important concern and put a healthy and wise spin on it. My diet is so limited, I'll be in trouble if there are major shortages. I loved learning about the 3 priorities because I don't give enough attention to water. I have a 10,000-gallon water tank, but the pump won't work without electricity. How would I purify the water if the stove doesn't work?

That’s a great question, Sandra. There is a good article that covers options that backpackers use… similar situation. For some reason I can include a link in this comment but I’ll DM you.

Thanks very much. I know there's the Berkey Water Filter, but I've never looked into it to see whether it would work with catchment water. At the moment, I don't use my catchment water for drinking. I pay for water from the water purifier machine at the store and refill my empty water bottles.

Tks Maia. I’m in the process of getting mine together (again— contents tend to dissipate over the years) as I live in a fire susceptible forest in Central Oregon. I like the slightly different approach than from our local fire guys, who are good too, but the bodhisattva attitude is 😑🙏🏼 I just ordered the book too !! I’m sure I can learn some new things.

I’m going to order the book too — it looks really good!
